Day 2: Monday, July 24 Storm Lake to Carroll

Pass Thru Towns

  • Early
  • Lake View – Meeting Town
  • Breda
  • Mt. Carmel

Things to know about each city/town

  • Storm Lake – There are multiple stories related to the naming of Storm Lake: the most popular story and the most romantic. Let’s start with the most romantic. A Sioux maiden was forbidden to marry into another tribe, so the two eloped across the lake in a canoe. A storm capsized their canoe and they both drowned, leading the Sioux to name it Storm Lake.
  • Early – Early’s “claim to fame” is that it is the Crossroads of the Nation, because U.S. Highway 71 and U.S. Route 20 intersect there.
  • Lake View – The town was incorporated as a city and the name was changed from Fletcher to Lake View in 1887. The present name was selected for the scenic view over Wall Lake.
  • Breda – Breda got its start in the year 1877, following construction of the Maple branch of the Chicago and North Western railroad through that territory. It was named after the Dutch city of Breda by a settler native to that place.
  • Mt. Carmel – The first church built in 1869 was a frame structure on a stone foundation. It was 24-feet by 40-feet of unknown cost. This was the only Catholic Church between Boone and Council Bluffs.
  • Carroll – It was named in the honor of Charles Carroll of Carrollton. He was the only Roman Catholic who signed the Declaration of Independence. In 1869, Carroll became the county seat. Prior to that Carrollton was the county seat.
